1- Gray buffer

DIY Mani Procedure:

1. Remove any existing nail color. Use nail scrub brush to clean under nails, wash and dry hands thoroughly.

2. Assess health of nails. Are nails split or broken? Determine the shape that best suits your nail bed and desired (or dictated by breakage) length, use nail clippers to take off length, shaping as you go.

3. Hold your hand up with your palm facing you, bend your fingers so your nail plate is facing you, then, holding the file at an angle (not perpendicular) to the free edge (tip) of the nail smooth any sharp edges from trimming using the orange nail file. File your nails from lateral edges in toward the center. Do not use a back and forth sawing motion, instead pick up file and start back at lateral edge.  Use the grittier side if you have more length and shaping to do or the smoother side if your nails are thin, weak or you have minor smoothing to do.  Use the smoother side of the file to remove any debris from underneath the nail.

4. Soak fingertips in a bowl of warm water with Epsom salt and lavender Essential oil or powdered coconut milk for hydration.  After a few minutes, remove hands and pat dry.  Apply a small amount of cuticle remover lotion on the cuticle at the base of each nail. Gently massage in using your thumb. Use the pointed end of the cuticle stick to remove any remaining dirt from under the nail. Holding the orange wood stick at a 45* angle gently push the cuticle back using the slanted end of the stick, starting at the moon in the center and working your way out to the edges.  The opposite direction of filing. It is helpful to have a paper towel handy to wipe debris/dead skin from the cuticle stick. We recommend not trimming your cuticles at home unless you have a snagged cuticle that needs to be trimmed to avoid further damage.  General cutting of cuticle should be left to a professional armed with the proper tools only. Wash cuticle remover lotion away and dry hands thoroughly.

5. If you want to keep your nails au naturel use the gray/white buffer. The gray side will remove ridges and smooth the nail plate. Less is more here so check the progress often and stop when you’ve reached desired smoothness.   Slow down and pay careful attention when buffing near the cuticle to avoid roughing.  Use the white side to shine the surface of the nail. Finish by applying Vitamin E oil or Jojoba oil or your favorite hydrating lotion or body butter to your cuticles and nail plates.

6. If you want to take it a step further and apply nail color, swipe nail polish remover across your nail plate to remove any oils or residues for better polish adhesion.  If the nail color you use suggests a base coat do not skip this step! (Our Vinylux does not require a base coat). Begin by placing base coat applicator brush at center of nail near cuticle. Push toward cuticle ever so slightly to get as close as possible to cuticle, then swipe to tip of nail. Place brush at center of nail near cuticle again but this time swipe to the side and up the side of the nail forming a half U, repeat on other side of nail. Hold brush almost perpendicular to tip of nail and swipe base coat along the free edge (front of nail tip) from one side to the other. Repeat process for all nails on that hand. Apply nail color in same manner as base coat, being sure to apply thin color coats and swiping brush across the tip.  Allow to dry for a minute or two between color coats.  You may need to do 3 coats depending on coverage of your color.  Finish with top coat. I always paint my dominant hand to completion first, which allows me to clean up any mistakes with with my non-dominant hand. This takes more time as you need to account for more drying time but I believe the results are better. Apply a fresh coat of top coat every couple of days to keep the shine and help your polish last longer.

DIY Pedi Kit ($7.50)

Includes:

1- Nail scrub brush
1- 100/180 grit nail file
1- Blue buffer
1- .25 oz cuticle remover lotion
2- 7″ wood cuticle stick
1- gray buffer
2- Toe separator cotton rope

*We have SpaRitual foot files (pictured but not included) with replacement pads, soaks, sugar exfoliating scrubs, body lotions and butters, nail color, base and top coats from Zoya (pictured but not included) and OPI available. Email info@jinseispa.com for product inquiries.

DIY Pedi Procedure:

1. Remove any existing nail color. Assess health of nails. Are nails ridged or broken? Determine the length that best suits your lifestyle or preference.  Trim nails straight across.  Avoid trimming nails in a rounded shape as this can lead to ingrown toenails. You will shape the edges with a file later. Fill a container large enough to place both feet in with hot water and feel free to add Epsom Salt, essential oils or any other skin softening ingredient you choose.

2. Focusing on one foot at a time, leaving the other in the warm water, use scrub brush to clean on, around and under nails.  Use a foot file (we love the SpaRitual with replacement pads for home use) to smooth calluses from heels and balls of feet.  If you have a salt or sugar exfoliating scrub now is the time to use that.  (Emulsify about a quarter size of scrub in the palm of your hand and work all around your foot, ankle and lower leg in an upward circular motion. Rinse well).  Otherwise, remove feet from water, pat dry, apply cuticle remover to cuticle area and massage in. Let sit for a minute or two.

3. Holding the orange wood stick at a 45* angle gently push the cuticle back starting at the moon in the center and working your way out to the edges.  Have a paper towel handy to wipe any debris/dead skin from the cuticle stick as you go.  We recommend not trimming your cuticles at home unless you have a snagged cuticle that needs to be trimmed to avoid further damage.  General cutting of cuticle should be left to a professional armed with the proper tools only. Slide cuticle stick from one side to the other under nails to remove any debris. Rinse cuticle remover lotion away and dry feet thoroughly.

4. Now it’s time to shape the nail and remove sharp corners from the straight across trimming.

Finish by massaging your favorite hydrating lotion or body butter to your cuticles, nail plates, feet and legs.  If you have pronounced ridges and want to apply nail color we recommend using the blue buffer before skipping to step 6.

6. If you want to take it a step further and apply nail color, first massage your favorite body lotion or body butter to your cuticles, feet and lower legs then swipe nail polish remover across your nail plate to remove any oils or residues for better polish adhesion.  If the nail color you use suggests a base coat do not skip this step! The base coat helps adhesion and prevents staining of the nail plate as pedicure polish typically stays on for 4-5 weeks.  Begin by placing the cotton rope between the big and second toe. Loop rope under second toe then do an over-under until you’ve gotten to the pinky toe. Place the base coat applicator brush at center of nail near cuticle. Push toward cuticle ever so slightly to get as close as possible to cuticle, then swipe to tip of nail. Place brush at center of nail near cuticle again but this time swipe to the side and up the side of the nail forming a half U, repeat on other side of nail.  Repeat process for all nails on both feet. Apply nail color in same manner as base coat, being sure to apply thin color coats.  Starting and ending with the same toe will allow polish to dry for a minute or two between color coats.  You may need to do 3 coats depending on coverage of your color.  Finish with top coat applied in the same manner.  Apply a fresh coat of top coat every week or so to keep the shine and help your polish last longer.
